Since time began, humans have gleaned psychological and health benefits from a proximity to nature – this is known as biophilia or ‘love of life’. Yet as our society becomes increasingly urbanised, we find ourselves evermore isolated from the natural world. Can the way we design and build urban spaces help to change this?
How does biophilia help us?
We know that plants are nice to look at, but how does closeness with nature actually help humans on a deeper level?
Improved health
Studies have shown that live indoor planting can reduce common illnesses. By absorbing air-borne toxins, plants can improve minor respiratory conditions and headaches caused by indoor air pollution. Not only that, but plants can reduce symptoms of fatigue, lowering the risk of burnout.
A calmer mind
Plants have been proven to reduce stress levels and improve mood, so much so that in Japan doctors frequently prescribe spending time in nature (known as ‘shinrin-yoku’ or ‘forest bathing’) as a treatment for anxiety.
Creative inspiration
Feeling uninspired? Look at your nearest plant. Research shows that when we look at greenery our brain’s attention circuits are recalibrated, restoring our creativity and improving our focus.

What does Plant Designs do?
In short, we help bring greenery into people’s lives through designing and creating plant-centric spaces. While our process can vary depending on our clients’ requirements, here are some of the steps that typically take the project from conception through to occupancy.
Initial concept design, where we learn more about the vision for the space and assess how biophilic elements could be integrated
Design development, where we work collaboratively to create suitable planting displays and technical designs
Plant installation, whereby materials are sourced and designs implemented by horticultural technicians
Ongoing consultation and aftercare to ensure the plants thrive in their new home, keeping the space green for years to come
